Artists In Art | July 22, 2017 | 1-8pm | West Tisbury

Artists in Art supports the exhibiting artists, and two Island non-profits, Martha's Vineyard Center for the Visual Arts, and 105-5-FM WYOB, the MV Regional High School radio station.

All proceeds from the sale of individual artists' work go entirely to the artists -- the show is not taking a commission.

Proceeds from the sale of the portraits by Elizabeth R. Whelan include the following donations: 10% to the artist subject, and 20% to the non-profits.

And you can donate directly to MV Center for the Visual Arts, and the radio station WYOB, who will have representatives on hand to tell you more about their excellent work! These are two great Island causes that could use your help.

In addition, the show promotes and supports the local art galleries that represent Island artists, as well as the local framers and art suppliers.

Every dollar spent at Artists in Art goes directly - 100% - to support the arts and the creative community on Martha's Vineyard. Support your local art community with a purchase of a new work of art, and donate directly to help the high school radio station and local artist grant funding!

Elizabeth Whelan is a local artist who moved to West Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard over a decade ago, running her own graphic design and illustration business in Vineyard Haven. It was busy and wonderful. Then she was introduced to oil painting and a new phase of her life began. She took a part-time property caretaking job in the Elizabeth Islands which allowed her to start a new career in fine art specializing in portraiture and realistic figurative work.  During that time the Martha's Vineyard arts community gave her the best support she could hope for in her new venture.

Now she wants to return the favor with a fun art event showcasing the powerhouse of local art talent, and the galleries who support the Vineyard artists.

Over the last couple of years Elizabeth Whelan has been painting portraits of various Island residents and using the unveilings as a way to draw attention to their business and her own work. The public reaction has been very positive; it’s fun to see the reaction of the subject when they first see the portrait, it’s something a little different, and it’s a good excuse for a party.

Won't you please join us on Saturday, July 22, from 1-8 pm for Artists in Art!

The process of selecting the artists for the show has been very organic. All but one of the artists are year-round residents of Martha's Vineyard, and all are part of a hard-working core of artists and artisans carving out a living in a challenging economic environment. Elizabeth concentrated for the most part on painters so as to have an additional selection criteria.

There was no particular method to her approach: she began with the artists who she knew best, those who had given her advice and support as she began her new career. She also included artists whose work she had long admired. Along the way, she discovered new artists -- in fact so many that she could easily have painted far more portraits than these! Martha's Vineyard has an amazing number of talented artists of all kinds.

In the end she considered the show as a whole to make sure that style and subject was balanced, and that anyone attending -- including the artists -- would have a chance to meet new people and see new art.
